Adding External Links to the Favorites Menu
Do you spend most of your day going between several screens in Dynamics SL, comparing data to outside sources, referring to references outside the built-in help system, and opening web pages or other tasks?
If so, one way to save time is by adding links to external files and sources on your Home screen on the Favorites menu.
For people who only open a couple screens on an average day, Dynamics SL does have the “Add Screen to Favorites” feature when right clicking on a selection in the right panel, but if you need more than that, the add external links to your Home Screen Favorites is a great tool.
Adding an External Link:
When you have Favorites highlighted and then click on the tools icon, you can see the “Add XXX to Favorites” options not related to built-in screens become available.
Click “Add External Link to Favorites”
For example, let’s say I want to add a .pdf file to my favorites. So in the open dialog that pops up I’ll change the file type selection from “Applications” to “All Files” so that I can see everything available.
Next, click on the General Ledger User Guide and click Open. Just like that, you have a new external link to a file that will open its associated program when double clicked.
The full path name to the file in the example link is a bit long, so let’s fix it. Right click on the new link and click “Organize Favorites”
In the Organize dialog, click rename and type in “General Ledger.”
Now move it up or down to the desired spot
Additionally, the buttons for “New Folder”, “Move Up” and “Move Down” give you the ability to organize all your links. It’s simple to make an easy access work flow where your screens, websites, Excel files, reports, and applications can be managed.
Now in our favorites area we have a quick link to our external PDF, GL User’s Guide.
