MR 2012 Upgrade Timeout Error Fix

Fixes from the desk of Crestwood Consulting:  

While upgrading a customer to Management Reporter 2012, Cumulative Update (CU) 10, we ran into a problem – the conversion kept getting errors and not completing!

Looking closer at the error message, it was a SQL timeout error – here’s the actual error:

Error SQL72014: .Net SqlClient Data Provider: Msg -2, Level 11, State 0, Line 0 Timeout expired.  The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding

Upon closer look, we realized the update was trying to work with a table that had over 100 million rows in it.  So looking at the application doing the conversion, I discovered that the timeout value in the XML was only set to “120”, which is not enough time to do all the conversions.

The Fix:

1. Open the XML file for the program:

(default path: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics ERP\Management Reporter\2.1\Server\Console\MRConfigurationConsole.exe.config)

2. Find the SQL time out value setting:

<appSettings>
  <!-- SqlTimeout - Timeout in seconds. -->
  <add key="SqlTimeout" value="120"/>

3. Change the value to something higher than “120” e.g. 120000 - as this will allow enough time for the SQL data conversion statements to complete.

4. Restart the configuration console so the new settings get applied.
