Support issue: Unable to open the window or help field

Posted by Donna Krizik on May 24, 2013

If Microsoft GP 2013 is being used on a computer running Windows Vista, 7, Server 8, Server 8 R2, 8 or 8 Server Beta, the Help feature is not available in some programs because they don’t include WinHlp32.exe. In order to open any .hlp files, you must install this component.

Luckily, it’s a simple fix!

First, determine if you have a Windows 32-bit or Windows-64 bit system (logged in as administrator):

  1. Click Start, type msinfo32 in the Start Search box or in the Search programs and files box, and then press Enter.
  2. Locate your operating system next to the OS Name line. Locate your architecture type next to the System Type line.

To install the correct WinHlp.exe file:

  1. Click one of the following “Windows Help program” links, depending on the operating system that you are running:
  • Windows Help program (WinHlp32.exe) for Windows 8
  • Windows Help program (WinHlp32.exe) for Windows 7
  • Windows Help program (WinHlp32.exe) for Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Help program (WinHlp32.exe) for Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Windows Help program (WinHlp32.exe) for Windows Vista

       2. Click Continue to run Genuine Windows Validation.

       3. Download and install Windows6.*-KB917607-x64.msu or Windows6.*-KB917607-x86.msu, depending on the edition of the operating system that you are running.
