Warehouse Management, Shipping, Transportation Systems – Oh My!
Where does Acumatica fit?
Let’s start by level-setting on the three components to a robust logistics network, Warehousing, Shipping, and Transportation.
- Warehouse management focuses on execution inside the four walls: receiving, put-away, storage, picking, packing, transfers, and counting. In Acumatica, these operations are automated through barcode-driven workflows and mobile-enabled processes that support real-time interaction with inventory.
- Shipping, within that same context, is part of the fulfillment process. It connects picking and packing to shipment confirmation, including packaging logic that can be configured or automated at the shipment level.
- Transportation systems operate beyond that boundary. They deal with how goods move between locations, carrier optimization (different than selection), routing, and freight decisions, rather than how goods are handled inside the warehouse.
Let’s break down Warehouse Management:
Acumatica supports end-to-end warehouse operations including receiving, putting away, picking, packing, shipping, transfers, and physical inventory counting. These processes are driven through barcode-enabled workflows and mobile devices, allowing users to execute tasks in real time as inventory moves through the facility.
Workflows are configurable. Operations such as picking, packing, and shipping can be structured in different sequences depending on how a warehouse operates. Advanced execution patterns like wave picking and batch picking are supported to improve efficiency at scale.
Inventory control is embedded in these processes. Lot and serial tracking can be configured to meet traceability requirements, while physical inventory can be managed through cycles and classification methods such as ABC codes.
Internal logistics are also part of the model. Warehouses can be replenished from other warehouses through transfer orders, including the ability to generate those transfers from demand signals. Planning capabilities such as DRP balance supply and demand and generate actionable suggestions for inventory movement.
The result is a system that manages the full lifecycle of inventory inside the warehouse with a high degree of control and visibility.
Let’s break down Shipping:
Within Acumatica, shipping is tightly integrated into the pick-pack-ship process. Once items are picked and packed, rates can be compared and service selected. Then shipments are confirmed and prepared for delivery. Packaging can be handled manually or automatically, with the system able to determine the best packaging configurations for shipments when enabled.
It ensures that what was picked and packed is accurately staged and confirmed for outbound movement, maintaining alignment between inventory, orders, and shipment records.
Let’s break down Transportation Management:
Instead of focusing on execution within a controlled environment, transportation deals with movement across a network. That is carriers, routes, costs, and delivery constraints that extend beyond a single warehouse.
This is where transportation management systems come into play and there are several ways to approach this within an Acumatica-centered architecture.
One option is to extend Acumatica directly, Crestwood has a team of individuals to help. Using the xRP framework, transportation capabilities can be built as native functionality within the platform, something only modern ERPs are capable of. These extensions operate within the same user interface, data model, and workflow engine, creating a seamless experience that becomes a native enhancement to Acumatica.
Another option is to integrate with a dedicated TMS. In this model, Acumatica continues to manage orders, inventory, and warehouse execution, while the external system handles carrier selection, routing, and freight optimization. Data flows between systems to maintain alignment across operations and financials.
A third option is to deploy a third-party TMS alongside Acumatica, selecting a solution that matches your organization’s level of complexity and scale.
Each approach allows transportation to evolve independently while maintaining Acumatica as the operational core.
Future-proofing with AI
If your warehouse processes are already barcode-driven, your inventory movements are being captured in real time, and your replenishment logic is defined in the system, you have the kind of data foundation AI depends on.
That does not mean AI replaces warehouse management or transportation systems. It means companies with clean process data will be in a better position to use AI for forecasting, exception handling, and decision support as those use cases mature. Acumatica is expanding heavily in this space with their new AI Automation and AI Assistant workflows.
Not Sure Where Your Logistics Process Is Breaking Down? Work with Crestwood to Identify the Gaps
Warehouse, shipping, and transportation systems don’t fail in one place. The issues are usually spread across workflows, handoffs, and visibility. In this working session, Crestwood will help you pinpoint where those breakdowns are happening and what to prioritize next.
