Business Central Financial Reporting enhancement with 2026 wave 1 (v 28)

Business Central Financial Reporting by Dimension Arrives in 2026 Wave 1

Financial leaders depend on accurate reporting to understand performance across departments, regions, and business units. With Business Central 2026 Wave 1 (Version 28), Microsoft has introduced a significant enhancement to Business Central financial reporting that allows organizations to automatically generate financial statements by dimension or dimension combinations.

As a former Dynamics GP and Management Reporter user, I was excited to see this feature because it provides functionality similar to Management Reporter’s reporting trees directly within Business Central.

Let’s take a look at how it works.

New Dimension Perspectives in Business Central Financial Reporting

On the Financial Reporting list, you’ll notice several new options related to Dimension Perspectives.

Dimension Perspectives provide a way to automatically generate financial reports across all values of a dimension without manually filtering and running separate reports.

Setting Up Business Central Financial Reporting by Dimension

This feature works together with Analysis Views.

In this example, an Analysis View has been created using the Department dimension.

A new Dimension Perspective called DEPT is then configured using the Department dimension.

Once configured, Business Central can automatically generate financial statements for every department associated with that dimension.

Automatically Generate Financial Statements for Every Department

When running an Income Statement, Business Central automatically creates:

  • One report containing company totals
  • One report for each department dimension value

This eliminates the need to manually filter and rerun reports for each department.

Automatically Filter Financial Reports by Department

The generated report package includes a separate financial statement for each department.

For example, this report is automatically filtered to the Administration department.

The next page is automatically filtered to the Production department.

This approach makes Business Central financial reporting significantly more efficient for organizations managing multiple departments or business units.

Export Business Central Financial Reports to Excel

The same reporting structure can also be exported to Excel.

When exported, Business Central creates a separate worksheet tab for each department.

This makes it easier to distribute department-specific financial reports while maintaining a consistent reporting format.

Create Multi-Dimensional Financial Reports

Dimension Perspectives can also be configured using combinations of dimensions.

In this example, the report is organized by Area and then further broken down by Department.

This automatically generates financial statements for:

  • Europe
  • Individual departments within Europe
  • America
  • Individual departments within America

Organizations can use this approach to create highly detailed Business Central financial reporting packages without additional report design or manual effort.

Why This Matters

This is one of the most exciting Business Central financial reporting enhancements in 2026 Wave 1.

For Dynamics GP users who relied on Management Reporter reporting trees, this functionality delivers a familiar way to automatically generate financial statements across departments, regions, and dimension combinations. The result is faster report preparation, more consistent reporting, and improved visibility throughout the organization.
