How Dynamics GP Decides When Asset Depreciation Actually Starts

How GP Chooses the First Depreciation Period

Dynamics GP depreciation timing depends on two fields: the Placed-in-Service Date and the Averaging Convention

Start with the Placed-in-Service Date

Everything starts with the Placed-in-Service Date (PISD) the date the asset becomes usable in Dynamics GP. That’s not always the purchase date.

Apply the Averaging Convention

Next, GP checks the Averaging Convention on the asset’s book. This convention tells GP how to read the PISD for depreciation timing.

Here’s how the most common conventions turn a PISD into a start date:

  • Full Month → Starts on the first day of the month containing the PISD
  • Next Month → Starts on the first day of the next month
  • Full Period → Starts on the first day of the fiscal period containing the PISD
  • Next Period → Starts on the first day of the next fiscal period
  • Full Year → Starts on the first day of the fiscal year
  • Next Year → Starts on the first day of the next fiscal year
  • Half-Year / Mid-Month / Mid-Quarter → Starts mid-period, which changes the fraction of depreciation taken in year one
  • Changes That Affect Depreciation

The first depreciation period depends on two fields: the PISD and the Averaging Convention. GP treats both as depreciation-sensitive change either one, and GP recalculates.

When you change one, GP asks how much of the depreciation schedule to rebuild:

  • Life → Rebuilds the schedule from the beginning
  • Year → Rebuilds from the start of the current fiscal year
  • Recalculate → Rebuilds from the current period forward

This keeps your depreciation schedule mathematically correct.

Example

Asset details:

  • PISD: July 20
  • Convention: Full Month

GP’s logic:

1. PISD = July 20

2. Full Month → Start date = July 1

3. July = Period 7

4. First depreciation period = Period 7

5. First-year depreciation = 6 months (Jul–Dec)

6. Final-year depreciation = 6 months (mirrored)

Change the convention to Next Month, and the first depreciation period shifts to Period 8.

To Summarize

Understanding how GP determines the first depreciation period gives you control over:

  • Depreciation timing
  • First-year and final-year depreciation amounts
  • How field changes trigger recalculation
  • How to troubleshoot unexpected depreciation results

Once you know how GP reads the Placed-in-Service Date and Averaging Convention, the depreciation schedule stops being a mystery it becomes predictable and easy to manage.

Depreciation logic is one of a hundred small things that make GP hard to run without a specialist. If you’ve hit a snag GP support couldn’t untangle, our team handles this daily.
