Dynamics GP still runs your books. Orders still ship. Month-end still closes, eventually. Nothing about today feels urgent.
That’s exactly the problem. GP’s end date isn’t a feature gap you’ll notice gradually. It’s a fixed point on Microsoft’s calendar, and it’s closer than most finance and operations leaders realize.
What “End of Life” Actually Means for GP
Microsoft has set two dates, not one.
December 31, 2029, product enhancements, regulatory and tax updates, and standard technical support all end. GP stops evolving on this date. No new features. No guaranteed tax table updates for the years after.
April 30, 2031, the final date Microsoft will issue security patches, and only for vulnerabilities it deems critical. After that, GP becomes a static product: no patches, no support tickets, no escalation path.
That’s not a distant hypothetical. It’s five years and change from a hard stop on the software your business runs on every day.
Signs You’re Already Feeling It
The end-of-support clock isn’t the only signal. Most companies on GP are already running into friction that has nothing to do with a calendar date:
- No cloud access. GP is on-premises by design. Remote teams, multi-site operations, and mobile approvals all require workarounds that a cloud-native ERP handles natively.
- Rising maintenance cost. Server refreshes, patching, and IT overhead climb every year a system stays on-premises while cloud ERPs shift that cost into predictable subscription pricing.
- A shrinking bench of GP talent. Consultants and hires who know GP well are a smaller pool every year. Microsoft’s own development team has moved on to Business Central and Dynamics 365.
- No path to what’s next. AI-assisted reporting, real-time dashboards, automated document intake the features showing up in every modern ERP release aren’t coming to GP. It’s not on that roadmap anymore.
- PE and audit scrutiny. If your business is ever evaluated by a PE firm, lender, or new auditor, “we’re running unsupported software” is a question you’ll have to answer, not a detail you can leave out.
If two or more of these sound familiar, GP isn’t just aging it’s already costing you more than the license fee suggests.
What Changes When You Get Ahead of It
Companies that move before the 2029 date, not after it, get to make this decision on their own timeline. That’s the whole difference. A planned transition looks like a defined project with a start date and a go-live date you chose. An unplanned one forced by a security incident or a failed year-end close looks like a crisis with a vendor picking the terms.
Getting ahead of it doesn’t mean picking a platform today. It means understanding your real options:
- Stay on GP, supported. If GP still fits, Crestwood can keep it patched, hosted, and customized right up to the support window while you plan the next step on your own schedule.
- Migrate to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. The path Microsoft itself points GP customers toward, with native ties to Microsoft 365, Power BI, and Excel.
- Migrate to Acumatica Cloud ERP. A cloud-native alternative with unlimited-user pricing and deeper industry-specific tooling for manufacturing, distribution, and construction.
Each path has real tradeoffs worth walking through with someone who’s done this before not guessed at it.
Why Crestwood
Crestwood has run this exact transition for companies on GP for 27+ years, across 5,000+ implementations. When Wet & Forget, a PE-backed consumer products company, made the move from GP to Business Central, month-end close dropped by three days and their auditor’s questions stopped requiring a separate reconciliation file. That’s not a hypothetical outcome it’s what a planned, well-scoped GP transition looks like when the controls are built in from the start.
Every Crestwood consultant is an in-house employee not a contractor, not a third-party implementation team handed off after the sale. The same people who scope your transition are the people who support it after go-live.

You don’t need to pick a platform today. You need to know what the next five years actually look like on GP and what your real options are before that decision gets made for you.
